About
Melisa’s relational approach is founded on respect, humor, gratitude, and warmth.
Melisa utilizes an Emotionally Focused Therapy, Satir, and a feminist-informed approach to working with individuals, couples, and families. From a systems-based perspective, she views individuals as relational beings who are situated within an interpersonal and political context.
She strives to empower individuals, couples, and families to define their own meaning of health and wellness, and then works with clients to reach this optimum state of health.
Experiences
Since 2013, Melisa has had experience providing individual, couples, group, and family counseling services. She has provided counseling services in Montana, Idaho, and Oregon, supporting individuals across the lifespan with a wide range of presenting concerns. Her experience includes working in a therapeutic group home, serving in a K–12 day treatment program, and offering outpatient counseling in an agency setting. While her counseling experience is vast, her passion is for providing inclusive couples and family counseling services.
She is an Associate Clinical Professor at Oregon State University–Cascades, where she has served since 2019. During her time at OSU-Cascades, she has contributed in a variety of leadership, teaching, and service roles, including CACREP liaison, program coordinator, Clinical Mental Health Counseling track lead, instructor of record, and clinical supervisor.
She is the owner of Forest Grove Counseling, which she opened in 2021. The name of her private practice, Forest Grove, pays homage to her cherished childhood memories of spending time in the Little Snowy Mountains located in the beautiful state of Montana.
Education
She earned her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Counselor Education and Counseling with a specialization in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling from Idaho State University in 2018.
She earned her Master of Science (MS) in Health and Human Development with a concentration in Counseling and a specialization in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling from Montana State University in 2013.
Melisa earned her Bachelor of Science (BS) in Family and Consumer Sciences from Montana State University.
License and Credentials
Melisa is currently licensed in the state of Oregon as a Licensed Professional Counselor (#C5689).
Melisa is a National Certified Counselor (NCC).
Melisa completed an Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) externship through the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT).
Melisa was previously licensed in Idaho (LPC-6040).
As a Licensee of the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists, Melisa abides by its Code of Ethics. She also abides by the American Counseling Association’s (2014) Code of Ethics and the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors’ (2017) Code of Ethics. To maintain her license, she is required to participate in continuing education, taking classes dealing with subjects relevant to this profession.
